has been awarded a Fulbright Senior Specialists grant in Information

The University of South Florida’s
Lakeland campus will host the Spring 2005 Commencement ceremony
on Monday, May 9, 2005, 7:00 p.m. in the Youkey Theatre of the Lakeland
Center. Nearly 150 students are expected to graduate from the Lakeland

04-18-2005 . USF Lakeland Offers Solution to Low FCAT Reading Scores in Highlands and Hardee Counties
The University of South Florida Lakeland
is hosting an Interest Session at South Florida Community College
to identify the interest of teachers in Highlands and Hardee counties
seeking a Master of Arts in Reading Education. The Interest Session
will be held on April 21, 2005 at 5:00 p.m. in

04-18-2005 . Local Researcher given $51,000 to Study Disabilities
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has
awarded a $51,000 grant to University of South Florida Lakeland
Chair of Information Technology, Dr. Arthur Karshmer. The grant
will fund a 2-day workshop in Tampa created to discover methods
to increase the number of disabled students who attain degrees in
science related fields such as information technology (IT) and computer
science. More than thirty experts in the field of learning physical
disability from across the U.S. and Europe will participate in the

Offers Opportunities for Local Residents and Students
The 3rd Annual University of South Florida
Lakeland Career Fair will take place from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday,
April 20, on the campus of the University. "The fair is intended
to provide individuals with opportunities for networking, career
exploration, and employment," said Mary Mittag, Director of Career
Services. "Although the event is being held on our campus, it's
a chance for not only students, but anyone in our community who

03-23-2005 . USF Lakeland to Host Search and Rescue Expert; Showcasing
Footage from "Ground Zero" University
of South Florida professor of Computer Science and Engineering,
Dr. Robin R. Murphy is the inaugural speaker for USF Lakeland's
Saxena Family Endowed Lecture Series. In her lecture titled, "Up
from the Rubble: Lessons Learned with Rescue Robots," Dr. Murphy
will discuss the use of robotic technologies for rescue missions
and show footage of these robots at "Ground Zero" following the
terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, as well as field work
from Hurricane Charley and the La Conchita Mudslides. Read

NASW Social Work Luncheon
USF Lakeland student Luz Rivera will be
the first recipient of the Rath Family Endowed Scholarship. Rivera,
an undergraduate social work student, will be honored during the
11th Annual Social Work Luncheon hosted by Lakeland Regional Medical
Center and the National Association of Social Workers on March 17,

Presents at Counseling Symposium in Sarasota
A counseling professional
from the University of South Florida Lakeland presented papers during
February’s annual Winter Counseling Symposium sponsored by
the American Counseling Association (ACA) Foundation and Argosy
University. Susan Hurley, M.A., presented an education session titled
“Counselor Self Care; strategies for developing increased
resolve, hope and empowerment when working with victims of trauma.”

Dean's List Announced
USF Lakeland is pleased to announce the
following students who have been named to the fall 2004 Dean's List.
To be eligible, full-time undergraduate students must demonstrate
superior academic achievement and have completed 12 hours of graded
courses with no incomplete grades during the semester, while maintaining
a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Read
