12-10-2004 • Engle Re-elected to Second Term on USF Foundation Board
Local
Realtor and esteemed businessman Gene Engle of Lakeland was recently
re-elected to a second term to the University of South Florida Foundation
Board of Trustees. The Foundation serves as the primary fund raising
entity on behalf of USF. It promotes higher education in general,
and specifically encourages the advancement of teaching, research
and public service through private support for the university's
academic and student development endeavors. Board members are business
and community leaders who are vitally interested in the welfare
of higher education in the greater Tampa Bay region and in Florida.
During his previous term on the board, Engle was most proud of increasing
the visibility of the USF Lakeland Campus and Polk County area with

12-03-2004 • USF Lakeland Readies for Second Annual Fall Commencement
The
University of South Florida's Lakeland campus is proud to announce
their second annual Fall commencement exercises for Friday, December
10, 2004, 7:00 p.m. in the Youkey Theatre of the Lakeland Center.
Over 90 students are expected to graduate from the local campus
this Fall. The speaker for the Fall commencement exercises will

11-23-2004 • USF Lakeland; Master's in Counselor Education
2 Locations, 2 Interest Sessions, 2 Plans of Study
Would
you like to be a school or mental health counselor? The University
of South Florida Lakeland will host two interest sessions regarding
the Master's in Counselor Education program. These sessions will
determine the interest in providing this program in both Lakeland
and Avon Park. The first session will be held on Tuesday, December
7, 2004, at 5:30 p.m. at the South Florida Community College campus
for those interested in a program in Avon Park. The second will
be held on Thursday, December 9, 2004 at 5:30 p.m. on the USF Lakeland
campus for those interested in another cohort to begin in Fall 2005

11-17-2004 • USF Lakeland receives land, endowment donations from
Williams Acquisition Holding Company
The
University of South Florida's presence in Polk, Highlands and Hardee
counties grows stronger with the help of generous contributions
from a company with headquarters in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Williams Acquisition Holding Company, a subsidiary of the Williams
Companies, Inc., plans to donate 530 acres of land at the eastern
intersection of Interstate 4 and the Polk Parkway for the future
home of USF Lakeland's new primary regional campus. Williams Acquisition
also plans to contribute funds to establish the Williams Endowed
Professorship in Information Technology, the first endowed professorship
for the Lakeland campus. Read

Outsourcing of Jobs to Other Countries:
The
University of South Florida Lakeland will hold an Information Technology
Colloquium covering the outsourcing of jobs to various countries,
"What, Who, Where, When, Why, and How.." In recent years, and especially
months, Outsourcing has been a very hot and discussed topic for
the Information Technology field along with numerous other American
industries. The purpose of this colloquium is to pose, debate, and

10-11-2004 • USF Lakeland to Hold Information Technology Colloquium
The
University of South Florida Lakeland will hold an Information
Technology Colloquium covering HCI and Automated Sign Language
Recognition. The session will be held on Wednesday, October
20th on the USF Lakeland campus in room LLC 2125 from 12-1
p.m. The campus is located at 3433 Winter Lake Road, Lakeland. Lunch
will be provided and admission is free. In this meeting, Dr. Barbara
Loeding and Dr. Sudeep Sarkar will cover the state of art in automated
recognition of signed sentences based on the data sets used, features
computed, technique(s) used, and recognition rates achieved by research

10-11-2004 • USF Lakeland's First MSW Graduation
The
University of South Florida Lakeland is proud to reflect on it's
first-ever Master of Social Work graduates. The ceremony took place
on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at the Holiday Inn North, Conference
Center, Lakeland. USF Lakeland administration, faculty and staff
were excited to have completed the first cohort of MSW students.
This graduating "cohort" of fourteen students began taking classes
together in the fall 2002 semester and ended with their final exam

at Polk Museum of Art
The
University of South Florida Alumni Association, Polk County Chapter
will hold a Wine & Cheese Tasting event at the Polk Museum of Art
from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, October 21, 2004. The
Museum, located at 800 E. Palmetto Street, Lakeland, is currently
featuring the Picasso Exhibit-an added benefit for attendees. The

Interested
in becoming a counselor in the school system or in the community?
The University of South Florida's Lakeland campus will host an information
session on the Master's in Counselor Education program Thursday,
October 7, 2004, at 5:30 p.m. in the Media Center at Trapnell
Elementary School. The school is located at 1605 W. Trapnell Road,

Students interested in the Master of Arts in Counselor Education
Program may choose from 2 areas of study within the program, Guidance
and Mental Health. These programs prepare you for the School Guidance
Counselor Certification K-12 or Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor

09-27-2004 • 3 USF campuses open Tuesday; Lakeland to remain closed
Due to the harsh impact of Hurricane Jeanne on Polk County, USF
Lakeland will be closed this evening and tomorrow, Tues., Sept.
28. No classes will be held and only essential personnel will be
allowed on campus.
USF campuses at Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota/Manatee will
be open this evening and tomorrow, Tues., Sept. 28. Classes will
be held as scheduled, and faculty and staff are asked to report

09-25-2004 • Latest Update on Hurricane Jeanne
All
USF Campuses will be closed Sunday, Sept. 26. Only essential personnel
will be allowed on campus. The Emergency Operations Team is closely
monitoring the storm and will make a determination on Monday's status
by 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26.

The
following USF Lakeland students have been named to the Summer 2004
Dean's List: Raquel Negron, Sebring, William Henry Peavy, Tallahassee,
Stephanie Lee Wyse, Lake Placid. Full-time undergraduate students
who demonstrate superior academic achievement during one semester
are honored on this list. To be eligible, a student must have completed
12 hours of graded courses with no incomplete grades during the
semester and must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Read

09-10-2004 • Update of Hurricane Ivan Preparations - 5:15
p.m. Friday
USF
will make a decision about the need to cancel Monday classes or
close the campus on Sunday, September 12th.
The football game against Tennessee Tech will be played as scheduled
Saturday, September 11th at 7 pm at Raymond James Stadium. All other
university activities during the weekend are scheduled to continue
as planned.

to the potential impact of Hurricane Ivan the University of South
Florida Lakeland campus announces that the Educational Leadership
Polk County Cohort Recruitment Information Session scheduled for
Tuesday, September 14th, 2004 has been rescheduled for Tuesday,
September 28th, 2004 at 5:00 p.m. on the University of South Florida
Lakeland campus. This recruitment information session is for persons
interested in obtaining their Master's degree in Educational Leadership

Meetings for Polk County Stroke Survivors, Caregivers and Professionals
Polk
County stroke survivors, caregivers, and involved professionals
are invited to a free meeting on September 16, 2004, from 2 to 4
p.m. at the University of South Florida's Rath Senior ConNEXTions
Center, which is located at Suite C-200, 1350 East Main Street,
Bartow. The center is equipped with wheelchair access. The meeting
features practical ways stroke survivors and caregivers can live
and cope in today's society and at the same time learn to feel better
about themselves. The meeting is sponsored by Stroke Survivors and
Caregivers, Inc. of Florida, a non-profit corporation. Meetings
will be held the third Thursday of each month and free coffee and
cookies will be served.
09-10-2004 • USF Lakeland Information Technology Colloquium Rescheduled
Due
to the potential impact of Hurricane Ivan the University of South
Florida Lakeland campus announces that the Information Technology

09-06-2004 • USF cancels classes and clinic appointments Tuesday;
university open
Due
to adverse weather and road conditions in the Tampa Bay area from
Hurricane Frances, the University of South Florida will suspend
classes on all campuses Tuesday, September 7. Clinic appointments
are also canceled. If you have a question about your appointment
call (813) 974-2201. All USF staff are asked to report for work
as usual. However, any staff who may have been adversely impacted
by the storm and are not in a position to report for work should
use their best judgment and contact their immediate supervisor as
soon as possible.
