05-02-2008 • McKinley to receive King O’Neal Scholar Award from USF Lakeland
The University of South Florida Lakeland has announced that Nichole McKinley will receive the King O’Neal Scholar Award. Presented each semester by the Alumni Association in honor of charter graduates Lucas King and Evelyn O’Neal, the award recognizes graduating seniors with the highest cumulative grade point average, 4.0.
McKinley will be recognized onstage during USF Lakeland’s spring commencement May 5 at 7 p.m. in the Lakeland Center’s Youkey Theatre. She will also receive a certificate of accomplishment, a gold medallion of the university seal and individual recognition during the commencement.

05-01-2008 • Amanda Robinson named Outstanding Senior at USF Lakeland
The University of South Florida Lakeland has named Amanda Robinson of Lithia as the recipient of the spring 2008 Outstanding Senior Award. She is the first Hillsborough County resident to receive the honor. The award recognizes Robinson for exceptional achievements in leadership, scholastic achievement, school spirit, work experience and community spirit.
Robinson has excelled academically and is well-respected among her professors and peers. Her academic achievements have earned her membership in the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. She was named to the USF Lakeland Dean’s List, the National Dean’s List and USF National Society of Leadership and Success. A graduate of Durant High School, she earned an associate of arts degree from Hillsborough Community College.

04-28-2008 • USF Lakeland takes giant step to becoming USF Polytechnic
The University of South Florida Board of Trustees has taken the next step to rename the USF Lakeland campus as USF Polytechnic. The new name captures the mission of the regional campus located in Polk County on the state’s fast-growing high tech I-4 Corridor.
"The strategic mission for this campus is to follow the applied learning model as captured by the name polytechnic," said USF President Judy Genshaft. "The new name recognizes our commitment to applying technology to real world needs."

04-28-2008 • USF Lakeland commencement honors graduates
The University of South Florida Lakeland will recognize the achievements of 157 students at its spring commencement. The ceremony will take place May 5 at 7 p.m. in the Lakeland Center’s Youkey Theatre.
One hundred and forty-four students will receive bachelor's degrees, and 13 will receive master's degrees. Candidates are graduating with degrees in the areas of Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering and Information Technology. USF President Judy Genshaft will confer the degrees.

Elementary professional school counselors from the Polk County school district held their spring meeting April 10 at the University of South Florida Lakeland. The featured speaker was Dr. Wendy-lou Greenidge, assistant professor of counselor education, USF Lakeland. She spoke on “Using Online Resources and Technology to Improve Elementary School Counseling Programs."
In her presentation, Greenidge stressed the importance of information literacy -- the ability to recognize when information is needed and to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.

04-04-2008 • Students support Street Angels
The Street Angels need food to help feed the hungry. A group of University of South Florida Lakeland students has decided to help.
A nonprofit organization based in Winter Haven, the Street Angels provide food and financial support to the homeless and community members who are struggling due to job loss and economic hardship.
"We are at our lowest supply of canned food in five years," says Skyra Kim Norris, the organization's founder. "We have more demand than donations."

04-03-2008 • Volunteers wanted for Shalom-Center home makeover
A group of University of South Florida Lakeland students has decided to do a home makeover for the Shalom-Center for Peace and Restoration and is looking for volunteers.
The group will began painting and beautifying the home’s interior on Saturday, April 5, and will finish with landscaping and other exterior work on Saturday, April 12. Volunteers are welcome to help on either day. Read more

This summer Dr. Cynthia Patterson will travel to Miami, Massachusetts, New York and San Francisco. But she’s not going on vacation. And even though the trips are vital to her academic career, she’ll pay for them out of her own pocket.
Recent budget cuts across Florida’s state university system have forced scholars like Patterson, an assistant professor of English at the University of South Florida Lakeland, to choose between staying home or paying their own way to academic conferences. In higher education, attending such events is critical for professors, especially those in tenure-track positions seeking to develop a reputation in their area of scholarship.

“As hard as it might be to believe, many students just do not have belts and socks to wear to school,” says student Diane Boczkowski. “Those items are required under the school board’s dress code, so we are collecting new or used belts and new socks for students in Polk County public schools.”

03-24-2008 • USF Lakeland faculty and staff discuss state budget cuts
Senior Associate Vice President Judith Ponticell met with faculty and staff at the University of South Florida Lakeland March 20 to discuss state budget cuts to higher education.
"We have some serious budget issues in the state," said Ponticell, noting that the Florida Board of Governors has recommended a 17 percent budget reduction for the 2007-08 fiscal year.

Dr. Cynthia Patterson, assistant professor of English at the University of South Florida Lakeland, has been selected for a Jay and Deborah Last Fellowship in American Visual Culture from the American Antiquarian Society (AAS). The AAS is a national research library of American history, literature and culture. Founded in 1812 in Worcester, Mass., the library's collections document the life of America's people from the colonial era through the Civil War and Reconstruction. Collections include books, pamphlets, newspapers, periodicals, broadsides, manuscripts, music, graphic arts, and local histories.

Claire Johnson came to Winter Haven for family and sunshine. Trading blizzards for orange blossoms, she also found friendship, fun and fulfillment at the University of South Florida Lakeland.
An executive administrative specialist for Campus Facilities & Educational Outreach, Johnson will receive the university’s 2007 Outstanding Staff Award. The highest honor accorded to administration and staff employees, it recognizes excellence, commitment and a high level of performance and standards that support the overall values and service standards of the USF system.

Last year Lauren Denham was a student at USF Lakeland. Today she’s studying for a master’s degree at the University of Westminster in London and serving as an intern at the British Broadcasting Corporation.
The 21-year-old Polk County native works as a producer for the BBC World Service on “World Have Your Say.” An international news program, it aims for a “global conversation” by letting listeners from all over the world set the program’s agenda and share their views.

Polk County’s only early-dementia intervention program is a tribute to the difference one person can make -- and an example of the potential of many people with a shared passion making a bigger difference. It started with Dr. Aryn Bush, and then it grew.
“Through various stories, I have heard firsthand from individuals who have just received a dementia diagnosis,” says Bush, a faculty member and cognitive aging psychologist with the University of South Florida’s School of Aging Studies and the USF Lakeland Rath Senior ConNEXTions and Education Center in Bartow. “So I felt compelled to organize and begin an early-stage dementia support/education group. A new bereavement support group will start March 24 at the University of South Florida Lakeland Rath Senior ConNEXTions and Education Center in Bartow. “From Mourning to Morning” will offer ongoing support for anyone who is grieving the loss of a loved one. Free and open to the public, it will be facilitated by a state licensed, professional therapist from Hope Hospice and Community Services. The group will meet Mondays at 4 p.m. beginning March 24.

02-27-2008 • Local business group hosts anti-drug event at USF Lakeland
“I believe drug abuse is an issue we all can stop,” former DEA agent Bob Stutman said yesterday at “Rx for Lakeland: A Prescription for Drug-Free Teens.” He spoke to about 600 people in two sessions at the University of South Florida Lakeland as part of a two-day Lakeland campaign hosted by a group of local business leaders. Organizers estimated his total Lakeland audience over the two days to be over 2,000 people.

“We feel Lakeland has great potential. It’s a real growth area for information technology,” said Dennis Michael, vice president of information technology, FedEx Freight System, yesterday at the University of South Florida Lakeland’s Information Technology Colloquium
In his remarks, Michael, who hold a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from USF, offered insights into IT’s role at FedEx Freight. He discussed the challenge of how to converge systems and provide consistent applications throughout a multinational corporation.

02-18-2008 • Groundbreaking puts Polk County on the road to opportunity
Progress toward a new campus for the University of South Florida Lakeland took a giant step forward today when the Polk Board of County Commissioners held a groundbreaking ceremony for the widening and extension of Pace Road. When the project is completed, Pace Road will be a gateway to the planned new USF Lakeland campus at the intersection of I-4 and the Polk Parkway.
Speaking at the event Dr. Marshall Goodman, VP and CEO of USF Lakeland, said, “Some people see Pace Road. I see Innovation Way. This project will open up our entire region for economic development and serve as a gateway to opportunity.” Read more

At a time when a computing career seems like an impossible dream to certain students, the University of South Florida Lakeland has a program to help make that dream come true. Through the Students &Technology in Academia, Research & Service (STARS) Alliance, the university is working to increase the participation of under-represented populations, women, and persons with disabilities in computing disciplines.
STARS uses multi-faceted interventions focused on the influx and progression of students from middle school through graduate school that lead to computing careers. Through STARS, students receive academic and social development through mentoring and applied learning experiences.

When the Florida Consortium for Gender and Women's Studies 2008 Conference begins today in Tampa, scholars from the University of South Florida Lakeland will play key roles.
Dr. Orathai Northern of USF Lakeland served as conference program co-chair. She helped organize panel presentations and speakers as well as structure the two-day conference.
“This year’s theme is Femininities and Masculinities in a Global Context,” she says. “ Our panelists and speakers address this theme in a number of ways by engaging gender, performance, the humanities, media, sexuality, race and so on.”

The University of South Florida Lakeland today hosted the Tampa Bay Partnership’s board of directors meeting. Approximately 30 participants met in the new Lakeland Technology Building on campus to discuss regional partnerships and economic development priorities.
USF Lakeland VP &CEO Marshall Goodman, who serves on the Tampa Bay Partnership board, said, “Many of Polk County's needs can be addressed most efficiently if we have the support of our partners to the east and west. The meeting here gave the Tampa Bay folks a chance to see our recent investment in this facility and to network with Polk County economic development professionals.”

USF Lakeland graduate helps address Polk County teacher shortage
To address a teacher shortage, Polk County Schools aims to hire 1,000 new teachers for the 2008-2009 school year. Jennifer Jones aims to be one of them.
Five years ago, Jones worked as a teacher’s aide in a Polk County elementary school. Today, after receiving her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida Lakeland, she’s ready for a career as an elementary school teacher.
