USF Lakeland Dean To Teach
Web Course
LAKELAND,
FL (May 29, 2002) - While
many college and university administrators take a “hands off”
approach to teaching, USF Lakeland Dean and CEO, Dr. L. Preston Mercer,
will jump into the arena with both feet this fall with his new web-based
class, Nutrition: Concepts and Controversies.
An expert in the field of nutrition, Mercer has lectured around the globe
and is a Certified Nutrition Specialist, serving on The Certification
Board for Nutrition Specialists. He has held numerous positions in the
field, including serving as Professor and Chair of the Department of Nutrition
and Food Science at the University of Kentucky and as Visiting Professor
in Science and Sustainable Development, Department of Nutrition, National
Research Center in Egypt at the United Nations Educational Scientific
and Cultural Organization, Third World Academy of Science. Dr. Mercer’s
backgrounds in biochemistry and nutrition have allowed him to write and
publish over 135 manuscripts and book chapters.
Mercer’s Nutrition: Concepts and Controversies class is a nutrition
course for those wishing to increase their nutrition knowledge. The course
will consist of web-based assignments, examinations, papers and a threaded
discussion with the instructor and other students. Nutrition enrichment
topics will be broadcast on WUSF. The course will allow students to have
the benefits of the classroom while working from distant locations.
For more information on this course contact the USF Lakeland Office of
the Registrar at (863) 667-7000.
