USF Board of Trustees Approves Master Plan for New Lakeland Campus
LAKELAND,
FL (March 9, 2007) - On Wednesday afternoon the Board of Trustees of the University of South Florida met in Lakeland to hold a second and final public hearing on the master plan for the new USF Lakeland campus to be located on I-4 at the northeast corner of Lakeland, along the Polk Parkway.
In a brief meeting, the Board unanimously approved the master plan without reservation. The approval allows the University to continue to implement its plan for growth and progress as we serve the Heartland counties according to USF President Judy Genshaft.
Following the board's vote, Vice Chair John Ramil, a former chair of the USF Lakeland Campus Board, noted that the plan had been through a series of modifications but that the final product reflects the "enormous potential" the University sees in Polk County and the surrounding region.
"This campus represents not only the dreams of our University, but also of the communities we serve," added Marshall Goodman, Vice President and CEO of USF Lakeland. "President Genshaft has consistently advocated the regional approach that USF Lakeland models, and the new campus will enhance our capacity to deliver on the promises of access and excellence she and the Board have made. This campus can literally transform our region."
The next step, according to Greg Paveza, chairman of the site development committee, will be negotiation of a Campus Development Agreement with the City of Lakeland: "Given the high level of support that we have already experienced from the city, we expect that process to be both smooth and constructive."
USF Board of Trustee Chair Law thanked the many individuals and organizations who have contributed to the plan, noting substantial public input earlier in the planning process and cited Paveza in particular for "his diligent, methodical approach to this vital undertaking."
