Historic Bok Sanctuary hosts USF Lakeland for scholarship reception

Lakeland, FL (May 2, 2006) - The Historic Bok Sanctuary in Lake Wales was the site for the 4th annual University of South Florida Lakeland Gifts of the Heart scholarship reception on April 23. The reception provides scholarship recipients with the opportunity to personally thank the donors that make USFL’s scholarships possible.

“The reception was a time for the University to recognize our students’ academic achievements and community involvement on and off campus. The scholarship reception also provided an opportunity for the donors to be recognized and to meet the beneficiaries of their gifts,” said Dr. Judith Ponticell, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Being at the Historic Bok Sanctuary was a treat for everyone.”

Bok Sanctuary, a national landmark in Lake Wales, stands on the highest point in the state of Florida. The site was built in 1929 by Edward W. Bok, and includes a tower with carillon, 157 acres of landscaped gardens and a historic estate home. Edward Bok was editor of Ladies’ Home Journal magazine for 30 years and under his management, the magazine became one of the most successful publications in America. Bok was also a noted philanthropist, and he established many awards and civic enterprises.

Dr. Alice Murray, associate vice president for administrative and academic support services for USF Lakeland, says the event was special for the entire University community.

“This year, students received more than $13,000 in scholarships. These students have been rewarded for their hard work and dedication to academia as well as community involvement,” stated Murray.
