“Dream No Small
Dreams:” USF Names CEO for Lakeland Campus
Tampa,
FL (March 15, 2006) - University
of South Florida President Judy Genshaft announced today to the
faculty, staff, students and campus board at USF Lakeland that Marshall
Goodman, Ph.D., will be the new vice president and campus executive
officer for USF Lakeland.
Goodman, 49, comes to USF Lakeland from San Jose State University,
where he has served as provost and vice president for academic affairs.
He currently serves SJSU as special assistant to the president and
professor of political science.
Genshaft’s announcement concludes an extensive national search,
much of which was conducted by an advisory committee composed of
USF faculty, staff and community members.
“Dr. Goodman is considered ‘a rising star’ in
higher education, and as USF continues its climb toward the top
50 public research universities in the U.S., his leadership on the
Lakeland campus is a perfect fit,” she said. “He brings
energy and vision and very specific experience with the technology
and public sectors that will play a crucial role in the growth of
USF Lakeland and the USF System as a whole.”
Goodman’s nearly 30 years of higher education experience includes
key administrative and academic roles at the University of Cincinnati,
Georgetown University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
He also has extensive experience in the area of economic development,
having played an active role in San Jose State’s Silicon Valley
service area and in economic development initiatives in the Midwest.
While at UW-Milwaukee, Goodman served as special assistant for globalization
to then-Governor Tommy Thompson.
While visiting the campus last month as part of the selection and
recruitment process, Goodman addressed the USF Lakeland faculty
and staff with a presentation entitled “Dream No Small Dreams,”
during which he dramatically asserted his belief that USF Lakeland’s
future was, “bright and limited only by the imagination of
those involved in shaping it.”
“President Genshaft has nurtured a passion for excellence
at every level of the university. USF Lakeland has enjoyed tremendous
growth and is poised for even more dramatic changes, and I look
forward to the challenges and opportunities our university, campus
and community will face,” said Goodman. “Together we
will build academic programs and community relationships that will
sustain the growth we anticipate.”
Goodman received his master’s and doctorate from The Ohio
State University and his bachelor’s degree from DePaul University.
He also completed honors work in politics, philosophy and economics
at Oxford University in England. He is a member of the NCAA’s
Committee on Academic Performance and is the former Lead Provost
of the Western Athletic Conference Academic Alliance. Goodman’s
work has been published extensively in scholarly journals, and he
has delivered more than 20 presentations and papers at academic
conferences.
Goodman arrives at a busy time for USF Lakeland. Plans for a new
campus at the eastern junction of I-4 and the Polk Parkway are underway,
with a move-in date at least several years away. The current campus
is currently engaged in extensive program review and expansion and
preparations to open the new Joint Use Technology Building it will
share with Polk Community College, with occupancy expected in late
2006 or early 2007.
“During the recruitment process, my wife and I fell in love
with Lakeland and central Florida,” said Goodman. “We
look forward to great things on the campus as well as in each of
the diverse communities we serve as we settle in as colleagues,
neighbors and friends.”
Goodman, who is expected to take office on May 15, 2006, fills the
position being vacated by Preston Mercer, who announced last year
his intention to return to his faculty post. Genshaft thanked Mercer
for his service recognizing the great strides the campus has made
during his tenure as campus CEO.
