USF Lakeland to Award
First Rath Family Endowed Scholarship
at NASW Social Work Luncheon
LAKELAND,
FL (March 15, 2005) - USF
Lakeland student Luz Rivera will be the first recipient of the Rath
Family Endowed Scholarship. Rivera, an undergraduate social work
student, will be honored during the 11th Annual Social Work Luncheon
hosted by Lakeland Regional Medical Center and the National Association
of Social Workers on March 17, at the Lakeland Center's West Exhibit
Hall.
The scholarship is made possible through an endowment established
by the Alfred and Elva Rath family in the University of South Florida
Foundation, Inc. The endowment will be awarded by the Arts & Sciences
Faculty of USF Lakeland each spring to help fund the education of
undergraduate and graduate students in social science disciplines
such as Social Work, Gerontology, Sociology and Psychology.
"This scholarship enables us to celebrate an extraordinary life
committed to excellence in social work that is an inspiration to
many," said USF Lakeland Professor and Director of The Rath Senior
ConNEXTions and Education Center, Dr. Rosemarie S. Lamm. "The professionalism,
devotion and vision of Alfred Rath are his legacy and make him a
wonderful example for those working toward professional certification
in the social work field."
Alfred Rath, 92, aided in the formation of the Coalition on Aging
Think Tank (CATT) in 1998 and the development of the Rath Senior
ConNEXTions and Education Center in Bartow, a part of USF Lakeland.
He will be honored with an award at the luncheon for his commitment
to the community through social work, mental health services and
elder care.
