USF Lakeland Employees/Children
Go to Work
LAKELAND,
FL (April 21, 2003) - Though
employees at most companies are often discouraged to bring their children
to work with them, USF Lakeland will open the doors to children of employees
on “Bring Your Kids to Work Day.” April 24th marks the date
for employees to bring in their sons, daughters, grand-children and other
special young people in their lives to learn more about the work force.
Several age-appropriate activities are being planned for participants.
Children ages 5-7 will participate in the “Little Scholars” program,
taking part in games, puzzles and arts and crafts. The young scholars
will have the opportunity to hear stories read aloud, will watch an age-appropriate
movie complete with popcorn and refreshments and will be able to “recess” to
the USF Lakeland courtyard for outdoor games.
8-12 year olds will participate in the “University 101” program,
consisting of 15-45 minute workshops designed to encourage children to
think about future job-related goals. Guest speakers will include Information
Technology department chair, Dr. Arthur Karshmer, who will demonstrate
special robotics; Dr. Rosemarie Lamm, Arts and Sciences professor, will
highlight special topics in Arts and Sciences; and Dr. Preston Mercer,
Vice-President and CEO of the Lakeland campus will give a presentation
on nutrition.
13-19 year old participants will have more hand on training as they serve
as facilitators with the younger children in the “Little Scholars” program,
and attend workshops in audio/visual and computer technology.
At the end of the day, all participants in the program will attend a
ceremony where each child will receive a “certificate of appreciation” and
a special bag of “goodies” to take home. One lucky student
will have the opportunity to win a very special grand prize.
“I’m so pleased to see our employees and their families taking part
in this type of event. Children are our future and it is important for
them to learn about what the world has to offer them,” stated Dr.
Preston Mercer, USF Lakeland CEO and Vice-President.
