USF Lakeland IT Colloquium – Assisting
the Blind
LAKELAND,
FL (April 7, 2003) - The
final USF Lakeland Information Technology Colloquium for the 2002-2003
semester will be presented Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at 12:00
p.m. in room 2125/2126 on the Lakeland Campus. Dr. Art Karshmer,
Chair of the USF Information Technology program will present, “Using
the Computer to Improve Access to Mathematics by Blind Students.”
As Dr. Karshmer states, “One of the greatest stumbling blocks
in the ability of the blind to enter careers in science, technology,
engineering or mathematics is the paucity of tools to help them read
and write equations. Over the years, there have been numerous projects
with the goal of building special tools to help the visually impaired
student read and write equations.”
In his presentation, Dr. Karshmer
will describe some of the most interesting work in this domain and then
attempt to make recommendations and/or predictions about the future.
This event is free and open to the public. A free lunch will be provided
to those in attendance.
This final presentation will be given as part of the year long Information
Technology colloquia series presented by the Information Technology
department at USF Lakeland. During each month of this academic year,
a different topic concerning the field of Information Technology has
been discussed. The 2003-2004 Information Technology Colloquia series
will begin Fall 2003.
