USF Lakeland Commencement
Scheduled
LAKELAND,
FL (March 20, 2002) - The
University of South Florida is proud to announce commencement exercises
set for Monday, May 6, 2002, at 7:00 p.m., in the Youkey Theatre of the
Lakeland Center in Lakeland, FL. A reception will be held at 5:30 p.m.
honoring graduates and their families in the same location.
This is the second formal commencement for the Lakeland campus. There
are 63 students expected to graduate during the May 6th exercises. Held
in the Polk Theatre in Lakeland, FL, in May 2001, the first commencement
boasted 65 graduates with over 1,000 visitors in attendance.
John Ramil, President of Tampa Electric Company, will be the featured
speaker during this year’s ceremony. Ramil, who has served in his
current position since March of 1998, currently serves as a member of
the USF Board of Trustees and as Chairman of the USF Lakeland Campus Board.
Additionally, Dr. Preston Mercer will award three community leaders with
the USF Lakeland Distinguished Service Award. This is the first year for
the award, which will be given each year to a pillar of the local and
campus community who has been instrumental in the development of the area
and, most especially, the Lakeland campus. This year’s recipients
are Dave Ellsworth of Winter Haven, Paul Cate of Lakeland and Duane McConnell
of Lakeland. These gentlemen have been instrumental in the development
of Polk County as a whole and have been influential in the ever growing
development of USF-Lakeland.
USF Lakeland commencement exercises are free and open to the public. For
more information contact University Relations Program Specialist, Brenna
Smith, at (863) 667-7010.
