Amanda Robinson named Outstanding Senior at USF Lakeland
Amanda Robinson
LAKELAND,
FL (April 30, 2008) - The University of South Florida Lakeland has named Amanda Robinson of Lithia as the recipient of the spring 2008 Outstanding Senior Award. She is the first Hillsborough County resident to receive the honor. The award recognizes Robinson for exceptional achievements in leadership, scholastic achievement, school spirit, work experience and community spirit.
Robinson has excelled academically and is well-respected among her professors and peers. Her academic achievements have earned her membership in the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. She was named to the USF Lakeland Dean's List, the National Dean's List and USF National Society of Leadership and Success. A graduate of Durant High School, she earned an associate of arts degree from Hillsborough Community College.
At USF Lakeland, Robinson served as an intern in University Advancement, and completed an independent study project about her experience.
"Amanda's insights were incredibly helpful to me as I work to build a marketing practicum for our marketing students," said Carol Osborne, marketing instructor. "Her efforts will benefit students long after she has graduated. Amanda has proven that she is a high achiever and is extremely committed to her education. She is determined to succeed in business and will dignify our campus as her career advances."
Robinson is a leader not only in the classroom but also in the community, where she is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others. She serves as a children's minister and a youth leader at Pleasant Grove Assembly of God in Durant, Fla. A passionate football fan, Robinson founded and directed a youth flag football league for her church and local community. A resident of Lithia, she is currently a substitute teacher in the Hillsborough County school district.
Robinson is the first member of her family to graduate from college, and she credits their love, support and encouragement for helping her succeed.
"It's important that we never lose sight of what will be there when everything else is gone, and that is family," says Amanda.
"Ms Robinson is a wonderful example of the talent and potential of the young adults from Central Florida," says Assistant Professor Andrew Artis, Ph.D. "She is dedicated, hard working and extremely creative when solving problems. We are all benefit when graduates like her make their home in our community, and I am personally grateful for the role model she serves for our current students."
Robinson selected USF Lakeland after earning an associate's degree at Hillsborough Community College. She had a number of university campuses available within commuting distance.
"There was something about USF Lakeland that made me feel right at home," she says. "I felt like they wanted me here, that I was not just going to be just a another student number. The faculty and staff reached out and wanted to know me. I knew that if I pursued my bachelor's degree at USF Lakeland I would have a rewarding experience, and it has been that and much more.
"I feel truly blessed and honored to receive this award. USF Lakeland has had quite an impact on my life. Just being able to come here weekly and be involved both on campus and with my studies has been rewarding enough, but receiving this award just makes me realize how blessed I am to be part of this family here at USF Lakeland. It's something I will always cherish."
As the Outstanding Senior, Robinson will be honored as a special guest at USF Lakeland's May 5 commencement and sit onstage with the distinguished platform party. The president of the university and a representative of the USF Alumni Association will recognize her during the commencement exercise.
