New summer program targets gifted and talented students
LAKELAND,
FL (April 7, 2008) - The first summer day program for gifted and talented students is coming to Polk County. Sponsored by the University of South Florida Lakeland and Polk County School District, the Central Florida Gifted & Talented Institute will launch two exciting new programs in summer 2008.
Both programs - Hot 2 Bot and Sci-Fi High -- will offer innovative, challenging curriculum targeted at active learning for gifted students entering 8th and 9th grade.
The Hot 2 Bot Applied Robotics Academy will immerse students in information technology and engineering robotic concepts as they build two different types of robots, design programming for these robots, explore simple and complex machines, create remote operation devices, discover robotic career opportunities and learn about the impact of robotics on society.
Sci-Fi High: Where Fiction Meets Reality will explore the question "What If?" as it relates to literature, industry, entertainment, innovation, and technology. Students will delve into classic and contemporary science fiction themes such as time/space travel, heroes & villains, utopia, technology, and futuristic possibilities. The curriculum is fused with technology, whereby students will experience various forms of creative writing and generate original web sites, virtual graphic novels, short dramatic presentations and an online portfolio of their work.
Instructors have extensive experience in the content and associated skills and represent middle school, high school, and university expertise. Students will enjoy weekly field trips appropriate to the curriculum and will have the opportunity to attend Kennedy Space Center for a fun-filled, educational overnight experience. On the closing day of the program, the Exhibition of Excellence will feature a robotic competition and allow students to showcase their final creations to family, friends and community members.
Students must apply online for the program of their choice between April 7-21, 2008. Each program will randomly select 30 student applicants. These non-residential day programs run for three consecutive weeks from July 14 to Aug. 1, 2008 and will be held at USF Lakeland on Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.
