USF Lakeland faculty and staff
discuss state budget cuts
LAKELAND,
FL (March 24, 2008) -
Senior Associate Vice President Judith Ponticell met with faculty and staff at the University of South Florida Lakeland March 20 to discuss state budget cuts to higher education.
"We have some serious budget issues in the state," said Ponticell, noting that the Florida Board of Governors has recommended a 17 percent budget reduction for the 2007-08 fiscal year.
"At USF Lakeland, we must cut an additional 11 percent from an already reduced budget by July 1. This is a serious cut. Right now, everything is on the table."
The purpose of the meeting, said Ponticell, was to clarify any rumors and talk about what has actually been discussed.
"As we get more definitive information and guidelines from Tampa, we'll get it out to you," she said. "We want to make the process as open as possible so you know what is being discussed and what is to be done."
"Let's talk about what we're doing and ask what we must do," she said. "Can we identify campus-wide savings? Can we pay for some things from carry forward instead of base budget? It's important for us to think positively and be creative."
According to Ponticell, the bottom line is strategic budgeting, basing every decision on USF Lakeland's polytechnic campus mission.
"This is not an easy time," she said. "In fact, this is a critical time. It is a time that will test our commitment. How much are we committed to our vision and mission? Before making any decision we must ask ourselves, 'Is this necessary to get us to our mission? Will it help us build a polytechnic university?'
"Thanks to all of you for everything you do every day to build our dream. Hope is essential in everything -- give up hope, you give up that dream. Don't give up."
