USF Lakeland featured in city's strategic planning

LAKELAND, FL (February 21, 2008) - As the Lakeland City Commission begins its annual planning retreat today it will rely on input from the University of South Florida Lakeland. The annual planning retreat includes the Commission, city administration, and key stakeholders. The two-day event at the Lakeland Center will address issues such as growth management and quality of life topics.

Today's session will cover strategic planning, regulations, technology, the economy and the business environment. Friday will stress growth management, with input from planners, public works and utilities departments.

Leading up to the retreat, the city engaged in a variety of pre-planning exercises, including stakeholder focus groups. One of those key focus groups was education. David Steele, director of university advancement, represented USF Lakeland as part of that focus group. He will also join a panel discussion presenting focus group results at today's session.

"What's going on with USF Lakeland is exciting, and it's a great thing for the city," said Mayor Buddy Fletcher. "The new polytechnic campus is going to put us on the map in a whole new way."

USF Lakeland Vice President and CEO Marshall Goodman appreciates the support from Fletcher and the Commission: "I have repeatedly said that one of the reasons our new campus will succeed is the level of support it is receiving from the region and communities we serve. The city of Lakeland in particular has stepped to the plate with major investment to make this dream a reality, and we look forward to an ongoing partnership with the city as we move forward on the I-4 campus project."
