USF Cited in Princeton Review’s "Best 366 Colleges"
TAMPA,
FL (August 24, 2007) - The University of South Florida ranks number 17 among the Best 366 Colleges in the nation for diversity according to The Princeton Review’s 2008 Guide. Only about 15 percent of the four-year colleges in America and two Canadian colleges were selected for the book.
According to the Princeton Review’s research, USF warranted inclusion because it offers students an outstanding undergraduate education. The review also notes that USF “ is one of the 146 colleges named a Best Southeastern College” and “one of the best overall bargains—based on cost and financial aid—among the most academically outstanding colleges in the nation.”
In USF’s two-page profile, the results of student surveys showed an appreciation for the diverse student body. A student is quoted as saying, “Everyone here is from different walks of life and everyone here is open to it, accepts it, and loves it.” Another stated, “You can always find somewhere to fit in.”
Other comments focused on academics and campus life complimenting USF on the quality of its professors, the many opportunities for internships and the wealth of activities, from clubs to sports and social groups.
“We truly value diversity and inclusion and we are proud of all that we have to offer our students in this category,” said USF President Judy Genshaft. “It is gratifying to see that they in turn notice and value the excellent environment we maintain throughout the year.”
The Princeton Review also posts the book's annual ranking lists on its website www.PrincetonReview.com at which users can read FAQs about the book, rankings and survey.
Says Robert Franek, Princeton Review's vice president of publishing, "We chose schools for this book primarily for their outstanding academics. We evaluated them based on institutional data we collect about the schools, feedback from students attending them, and our visits to schools over the years. We also consider the opinions of independent college counselors, students, and parents we hear from year-long. Finally, we work to have a wide representation of colleges in the book by region, size, selectivity and character."
The ranking lists in the 2008 edition of "Best 366 Colleges" are based on The Princeton Review's survey of 120,000 students (about 325 per campus on average) attending the 366 colleges in the book. A college's appearance on these lists is attributable to a high consensus among its surveyed students about the subject. The 80-question survey asked students to rate their schools on several topics and report on their campus experiences at them. Ranking lists report the top 20 schools in categories that range from best professors, administration, and campus food to lists based on student body political leanings, race/class relations, sports interests, and other aspects of campus life. The Princeton Review does not rank the colleges in the book 1 to 366 in any single category, nor do the rankings reflect The Princeton Review's opinion of the schools.
The University of South Florida is among the nation's top 63 public research universities and one of 76 community engaged universities as designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. It is one of Florida’s top three research universities. USF was awarded more than $310 million in research contracts and grants last year. The University offers 217 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, specialty and doctoral levels, including the doctor of medicine. The University has a $1.6 billion annual budget, an annual economic impact of $3.2 billion, and serves 44,038 students on campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota-Manatee and Lakeland. USF is a member of the Big East Athletic Conference.
