Library Transformation
is Topic of Event
LAKELAND,
FL (October 11, 2005) - Technology
and the Information Age have placed new demands on the way businesses
are run, students are educated and people communicate with one another;
similarly, the very nature and role of the library system has been
transformed through technological advancements. This month University
of South Florida Lakeland Associate Librarian, Catherine Lavalée
-Welch will provide insight into these transformations during an
Information Technology Colloquium.
The event takes place from 12 to 1 p.m. Oct. 19 in room LAC 1280
at the USF Lakeland campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Her talk, "Brick and Click: How Computers Transformed Libraries
Inside and Out," will explain how computers have revolutionized
the way libraries relate to the information, materials and resources
they acquire and disseminate. Additionally she will discuss the
manner in which computers changed how the library world relates
to its users and review the history and future of computer use in
libraries.
Lavalée -Welch received her Master's of Library and Information
Sciences from the University of Montréal, Canada in 1995 and spent
five years as the Electronic Resources Librarian of the Laura Kersey
Library of Engineering, Physical Science and Technology at the University
of Louisville in Kentucky. She is the publisher of EngLib, a weblog
for engineering and science librarians, and was recently awarded
the Sci-Tech Achievement Award from the Special Libraries Association's
Science & Technology Division for her work with EngLib.
In an effort to give Polk County students, educators, community
members and business leaders exposure to new technologies, the USF
Lakeland Department of Information Technology hosts the free monthly
IT colloquium showcasing some of the technological advancements
that are improving organizations worldwide.
The colloquium, which began in 2002, features USF Lakeland faculty,
community members and visiting professors from other universities
and aims to expand the scope of traditional computer science education
into a broader set of disciplines more in tune with the needs of
modern society and business. It is scheduled for the third Wednesday
of each month on the campus of USF Lakeland. Lunch is provided for
participants. For additional information, contact department Chairman
Art Karshmer, Ph.D. at (863) 667-7067 or via e-mail at arthur@lakeland.usf.edu.
