Senior
ConNEXTions Center
To Hold Ribbon-Cutting
LAKELAND,
FL (November 24, 2003) - University
of South Florida President Judy Genshaft and USF Lakeland Vice-President
and CEO, Preston Mercer are proud to announce the upcoming ribbon-cutting
ceremony for the new ConNEXTions Center in Bartow, FL. The event, scheduled
for December 9, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. will serve as the official grand
opening for the new senior center.
The Senior ConNEXTions Center, located at the old Bartow Memorial Hospital
site, is a partnership between USF-Lakeland and the Coalition on Aging
Think Tank. The ConNEXTtions center is the “next generation of
senior care” and is the only one of its kind in the area, housing
services and information on Alzheimer’s, medication, educational
opportunities, care giving and other issues relevant to senior citizens.
"The Senior Center in Bartow will enable the University of South
Florida and the Coalition on Aging Think Tank to not only reach more
local seniors,
but to improve their lives," stated Brian Beatty, Coordinator for
Human Services for the Center. Beatty and his group of volunteer staff
members will be under the direction of Dr. Rosemarie Lamm, USF-Lakeland
Professor, Gerontologist and Director of the Senior ConNEXTions Center.
“The concept of a center which houses services available for
seniors in a community is one which has been studied by gerontologists
and promoted
by service providers,” stated Dr. Rosemarie Lamm. “A center
which connects the elderly and their families to resources is most valuable
because it prevents crisis. Seniors will become a part of the ongoing
service provision of the educational program of the University of South
Florida-Lakeland.”
