USF Lakeland to Consider
Land Proposals
LAKELAND,
FL (Novemeber 21, 2002) - The
University of South Florida’s Lakeland campus announces that it
is prepared to receive proposals for charitable gifts of property for
a new primary, comprehensive campus site. Final approval for this acceptance
was provided by the University Board of Trustees during the November 21st
meeting on the Lakeland campus.
The Florida Legislature has authorized the University of South Florida
to plan for the development of an additional, primary campus location
on a site to be donated specifically for this purpose.
The University of South Florida expects that donations will include suitable
land, a substantial permanent endowment and possibly gifts-in-kinds of
some, or all, of the infrastructure on the site. Proposals will be evaluated
by an advisory committee chaired by Dr. Alice Murray, Assistant Vice President
of the Lakeland campus, made up of faculty, staff, students and community
members. The deadline for consideration of proposals is January 31, 2003.
The committee will review all proposals and make recommendations to Dr.
L. Preston Mercer, Vice President and CEO, who will in turn, make a recommendation
to Dr. Judy Genshaft, President of the University of South Florida. All
proposals must be directed to:

Copies of the detailed Request For Proposals are available from Dr.
Murray.
The donor of the land will be a key partner with USF-Lakeland in its ongoing
partnership with the Florida Legislature to provide the opportunities
of a major research University which will serve as a center piece for
world-class education and economic development for Central Florida.
Since the doors to USF Lakeland opened in 1988, the number of enrolled
students on the campus has grown over 80%. Student enrollment growth has
brought with it a higher demand for complete-able degree programs offered
on the regional campus. The Lakeland campus brings to Polk, Highlands
and Hardee Counties, and to the Florida High Tech Corridor (FHTC), the
presence of a major research institution. An important manifestation of
this presence is the delivery of high-quality undergraduate and graduate
programs to the citizens of a dynamically growing part of Florida, and
the research potential associated with a major university.
As the University of South Florida’s Lakeland campus service area
continues to grow, so does the need for additional facilities to accommodate
the attendant growth in higher education degree programs. For this reason,
the University invites the submission of proposals for charitable gifts
of property, permanent endowment, and site improvements to create an expansion
of its educational services in Central Florida to a new primary, comprehensive
campus for USF-Lakeland.
The University of South Florida is ranked one of the top 100 Universities
in the nation. As a Doctoral/Research extensive institution, the highest
educational ranking available, USF Lakeland is dedicated to serving the
citizens of Polk, Highlands, Hardee and eastern Hillsborough counties,
in a regional setting. Established in 1988, the Lakeland campus is a distinctive
locally available University with premier research and instructional status,
providing a variety of complete undergraduate and graduate degrees, web-based
courses, certificate programs and program partnerships with the Tampa
campus. For more information contact USF Lakeland at (863) 667-7000.
