USF Lakeland Unveils New
Bachelor of Applied Science Program
LAKELAND,
FL (October 16, 2002) - In
the past, students wishing to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at the
University of South Florida’s Lakeland campus were required to first
attain their Associate of Arts (AA) degree at the Community College level.
Now, those students with the Associate of Science (AS) degree have the
option to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science (BS in AS) degree through
the university.
The BS in AS degree program is a “capstone” or “inverted
transfer” degree designed to serve all AS graduates who find themselves
in need of a bachelor’s degree for advancement in their current
employment or to qualify for higher level employment in other settings.
To be admitted to the BS in AS program, students must have an AS degree
from a Florida public community college and a minimum of 18 semester hours
of transferable General Education courses. Upon acceptance into the BS
in AS program, students will complete a 60 semester hour program offered
by USF. This will include completion of the general education curriculum
and hours completed in the study of one or two concentrations in selected
disciplines such as management, gerontology and urban studies; or upper
level liberal arts electives, and exit requirements.
The BS in AS degree is primarily intended to assist in job progression
rather than initial job qualifications. The program may also be of use
to those wishing to make mid-career changes.
USF Lakeland officials believe the program has many benefits for those
wishing to further their education. "AS to BS is an excellent opportunity
for an AS graduate to get an expedited Bachelor's degree through the state
of Florida University System - high quality education with extremely reasonable
cost," Dr. Preston Mercer, campus CEO and Vice-President stated recently.
For more information about the BS in AS degree at USF Lakeland, contact
the Office of Student
Services at (863) 667-7000.
The University of South Florida is ranked one of the top 100 Universities
in the nation. As a Doctoral/Research extensive institution, the highest
educational ranking available, USF Lakeland is dedicated to serving the
citizens of Polk, Highlands, Hardee and eastern Hillsborough counties,
in a regional setting. Established in 1988, the Lakeland campus is a distinctive
locally available University with premier research and instructional status,
providing a variety of complete undergraduate and graduate degrees, web-based
courses, certificate programs and program partnerships with the Tampa
campus. For more information contact USF Lakeland at (863) 667-7000.
