Overview
Today's
liberal arts graduates will become society's managers, problem solvers
and decision makers. These careers could be in health, government,
social work or the mass media. The College of Arts and Sciences
offers 45 undergraduate degrees in 53 major fields of study.
The education provided by the disciplines of the Arts and Sciences
is the foundation upon which the lives and professions of our students
are built, and the basis from which personal growth occurs. The
College of Arts and Sciences takes as its goal a melding of the
natural, humanistic and social philosophies into a comprehensive
whole that encourages the development of new ideas and new approaches
to the understanding of the universe.
Degree Program
The
USF Lakeland campus offers the Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary
Social Science (ISS). This BA degree currently requires 120-semester
hours and is designed to provide an interdisciplinary integration
of the social sciences for students who are interested in a broad
educational experience. ISS offers a wide choice of courses, and
an opportunity to design a quality program geared toward individual
needs and interests. Students plan their program in ongoing consultation
with the advisor.
A unique feature of the ISS degree is the cognate component. Students
must choose 2 cognate areas in which to concentrate. The 21 cognate
areas include: Africana Studies, Anthropology, Criminal Justice,
Economics, Environmental Science and Policy, Gerontology, Geography,
History, Humanities, Human Health Services, International Studies,
American Sign Language, Speech-Language- Hearing Science, Latin
Studies, Leadership Studies, Public Administration, Political Science,
Psychology, Sociology, Social Work and Women's Studies. The
cognate areas offered on the Lakeland Campus are: Criminology,
Gerontology, History, International Studies, Psychology, and Sociology.
Students receiving the ISS degree are prepared to go on to graduate
school as well as to enter a variety of related occupational areas
including: bank officer, Chamber of Commerce associate, career counselor,
community center director, consultant, correction officer, human
services worker, market researcher, probation officer and urban
planner.
Admissions Criteria
Students
wishing to transfer and be admitted to the USF College of Arts and Sciences
at the junior level from a Florida public community college, should follow
a general, liberal arts program leading to the Associate of Arts degree
and:
- Be accepted by the University as a degree-seeking student.
- Complete a minimum of 60 semester hours.
- Earn a 2.0 cumulative GPA in all college courses completed before
entrance.
Students are encouraged to choose courses from the Course
Track if available, during their program of study at the community
college, and when feasible in the General Education/Gordon Rule courses.
